Oculus Rift Set to Change VR Gaming For the Better
With the launch of the next generation of gaming consoles approaching fast, lots of people are wondering what sort of new innovative experiences we can expect in the coming years. Well, there are plenty of companies out there working hard to make sure next-gen doesn’t simply translate to higher resolution textures and more dynamic elements onscreen at once. I know I’m a bit late to this party, but…
One of the more promising ideations comes in the form of a virtual reality headset called the Oculus Rift. No, it isn’t Virtual Boy 2.0, it’s a legitimate leap forward in augmented reality technology thanks to its relative affordability (to be confirmed once an actual expected retail price is released) and totally immersive qualities. Pretty much everyone who has tried it is very enthusiastic about the possibilities of the hardware, and Sony is reportedly working on a similar product to be integrated with the Playstation 4.
I recommend watching this promotional video to learn more about the Oculus Rift and hear the positive opinions of many respected developers in the gaming industry. You can also check out a couple of IGN staff members’ impressions after trying a couple brief demos here.
The only downside I see to this tech is looking like a complete doofus while wearing it, but as Nintendo showed us with the Wii, sometimes you gotta look like a doofus to have fun. We may not see fully functional games using this revolutionary hardware for another year or so, but for the time being it looks promising and very exciting all the same.
