Arcade Fire – “Reflektor” Interactive Video

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Arcade Fire. Too long, maybe? To say I’m excited for their fourth studio LP to come out in October would be an understatement. The first single off the album, entitled “Reflektor” has just been released today, with a pair of accompanying videos. One is a more traditional piece shot in black and white (left), featuring ominous yet beautiful imagery. The second is an interactive experience somewhat similar to the project The Wilderness Downtown from a few years ago. This video (link below) was shot mostly in Haiti and uses Javascript web technology that allows viewers to alter the video in different ways by holding a smartphone up within view of a webcam and tilting the device in different directions.

While my  phone’s movements were slightly bogged down by latency issues, I expect that other users with more reliable internet connections will have a more fluid experience. I opted to watch the video a second time using my trackpad, which worked much better. Some of the effects are more enjoyable than others, with the best (in my opinion) happening around the midway point (see images below).

The song is excellent – hopefully a sign of things to come next month when the full album is released. The videos, while not totally revolutionary, are sufficiently artsy and innovative to have peaked my interest.

Check out the interactive experience and learn about the technology used to create it here. You’ll want to make sure you have Google Chrome installed on your computer first.
